this rant was written early this morning when i definitely hadn't had enough coffee. dave's vote for your favorite weblog thing was just one too many in a long list of popularity contests and it pushed me over the edge. lynette, unfortunately, caught some of the backlash being the second to last person to put up something in the same vein. and i apologize for that, i actually enjoyed her medley medals. i still stand by the overall concept tho. i'm tired of all of this. note to self: don't write something inflammatory, send it off quickly, then go into meetings for 6 hours.
note to weblog community: can we all stop acting like we're in high school? what started out as simple statistics tracking has grown into full blown popularity contests. people listing who they think are part of their "popular clique", people voting for their " favorite weblog". it was annoying back in high school and it's even more annoying now. there are over 400 weblogs out there. every time you write up a list of the 10 or 20 you think are great, 380 other people feel left out and hurt because they weren't included. it's all subjective, it's all meaningless and all you're doing is reinforcing that horrible culture that develops in high school and everyone trys to forget. if you want to point people to weblogs you read, credit them when you find a link. it's simple, it works and it doesn't hurt anyone else's feelings or set up this horrible culture. we've gone from being a community to being a bunch of teenagers trying to be popular and it disgusts me.
